World Champions in Rio Are Elected Athletes of the Year in Cuba
Idalys Ortiz and Asley Gonzalez received on Friday, 30/11, the award for \" Best Athlete of Individual Sports of the Year \" in Cuba, as a consequence of the vote given by the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, INDER , in partnership with the Circle of Sports Journalists of the country’s Union of Journalists. Both of them became world champions during the World Judo Championships held last September in Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, they won the Pan American title in San Jose, Costa Rica, apart from medals in World Grand Slams and Masters. Concerning the Brazilian stage, the winners attended in November the National Interclub Grand Prix, defending Minas Tennis Club. Idalys won the gold medal whereas Asley the bronze one.
The \"Best Young Athlete\", the winner of the women\'s suit was a judoka again. Gusmary García Savigne, only 17 years old and junior world champion in August in Miami, brought out the best from the Caribbean island. The International Judo Federation, in recognition of the results and sport participation in the country’s development, will hold in 2014 in Havana the first Cuban Grand Prix.
“Our three athletes are judo winners and we would like to thank the IJF’s President, Marius Vizer, for all their support they always showed us,\" said the president of the Cuban Judo Federation, Rafael Meek.
In Brazil, another world champion competes for the \"Brazil Olympic Awards\". Rafaela Silva is one of the candidates – together with the pentathlete Yane Marques and the aquatic marathonist Pollyanna Okimoto - to the award conceived by the Brazilian Olympic Committee, which will be held on December 17th.
