The European Judo Championship Well be Held in Azerbaijan
The new host country has been announced this week by the EJU. The judo competition was integrated into the European Games schedule.
After removing from Scotland the right to host the European Judo Championship for not agreeing with the UFC sponsorship of the event, the European Judo Union (EJU) and the Olympic Committee of Europe (EOC) have announced this week that the continental competition will be run in the city of Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. The event was included in the schedule of the European Games to be held between June 12th and 28th.
"With the cancellation of the event in Glasgow, our priority was to find a new home as quickly as possible," said Sergey Soloveychik, president of the EJU. "We found it and I am very happy with our choice. Baku 2015 has a local judo at a world level with facilities that will help the European judo elite to achieve their best performance in June, "he declared.
The European Judo Championship would be held in Glasgow, Scotland in April. However, a sponsorship agreement between the British Judo Association, the organizer of the event, and the UFC, MMA regulator, displeased the EJU which unanimously decided to take Scotland the right to host the event.
The judo competitions will take place at the Heydar Aliyev Arena, whose capacity was recently expanded to 7,800 seats.
The European Games are the first in history
Baku 2015 will be the first edition of the European Games, multi-sport event similar to the Pan American Games. There will be played 20 sports, 16 Olympic and four non-Olympic. 12 disciplines, including judo, will worth points for the Olympic ranking.
