Brazil Gets Three More Medals and Breaks the Record at the World Junior Championship

The individual competitions of the World Junior Championship ended this Saturday (26/10) at the Sports Hall Stozice from Ljubljana. Brazil won three more medals and broke the podium record. With seven medalists, the 2013 campaign exceeds the results from Cali/1998 and Bangkok/2008, when the green and yellow delegation won five medals. Only Japan, with 12 awards, scored more medals than Brazil.

The owner of the silver medal won on Saturday was Samanta Soares (AD São Caetano / SP ) , who won three rounds where she had been fighting for four minutes. She defeated the German Maike Ziech by a yuko. The Croatian Brigita Matic and the Canadian Ana Laura Portuondo Isasi were also defeated because they had more penalties than her. In the decision, she lost to the Japanese Shiori Yosimura by immobilization. It is the second medal at World championships that Samanta wins, after her bronze in the Youth Competition from Budapest/2009.

The two representatives of the heavy categories went to the podium as well. Sibilla Faccholli ( AD São Bernardo / SP ) , who kept her position at the last moment – as her two main competitors in her category , Ellen Furtado and Camila Gebara, got injured- showed herself to be ready for the big stage. By ippon won Sibilla her first two fights, against the Ukrainian Anastasiia Sapsai and the Ecuadorian Marlin Viveiros, and by  yuko she defeated the Kazakh Ruza Dukhturbayeva. In the semifinal, she was defeated by ippon by the Japanese Nami Inamori . However, she recovered and managed to win over the Croatian Ivana Sutalo in the contention for bronze. Ruan Silva ( CR Flamengo / RJ ) participated to one more fight compared to Sibilla. In the first round, he faced the Lithuanian Augustinas Seniauskas who ended up being defeated for having more Shidos. Then, he fought against the French Nabil Zalagh and  the Swedish Sebastian Fagerhill. In the semifinal, he ended up losing to the Mongolian Duurenbayar Ulziibayar. But Ruan dominated again the next fight, which he was losing because of a wazari; he applied eventually two yukos and immobilized the Georgian Giorgi Zakariadze and so he got a bronze medal.

The other Brazilian of the day did not reach the final block. Gabriel Souza (100kg, EC Pinheiros / SP) won in the fight of the first round against the Greek David Karaklidis by ippon, but was defeated thereafter by the yuko of the Dutch Sjors Riddersma.

On Sunday the team competition will be held.  The Brazilian women’s team will start fighting against the Belgians, whereas the men\'s team will face the Slovenian team. The overviews can be found in the attached documents.
