Three Brazilian Referees Are Among the World Top 20
The new ranking of the International Judo Federation has been updated after the Grand Prix from Dusseldorf.
One of the news regarding the decisions made by the International Judo Federation for 2014-2017 was a world refereeing ranking. The referees’ performance is marked at each event, considering criteria such as behavior, fight conduct, relevance in the evaluating the movements and their scoring, among others. And the list reinforces the level of national arbitration: three Brazilian representatives are on the list of the world best 20 referees. The country has 17 world professionals who can referee competitions such as Grand Prix, Grand Slams, World Championships and Olympics.
Professor André Mariano (DF) is the better placed Brazilian referee on the list due to his 8-marked performance at last year’s Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi. He is in the third place. With the same mark but in the fifth place we can find Professor Edison Minakawa (SP). He got his 8 in the Grand Slam from Paris , one of the traditional world tournaments.
\"I feel flattered to be in that position. I think the fact that we have three well placed referees clearly shows the level of our arbitration, but also shows that we come from a very strong school with outstanding teachers who built it for us. I believe we are not doing anything but keeping up this work, \" Minakawa said.
The Brazilian referee who participated in most of the competitions since the ranking was set was Professor Jefferson Vieira who was convoked to three competitions: the Grand Slam of Tokyo, Grand Prix of Jeju and the Grand Prix of Dusseldorf. He scored 21 points with his three performances and is 16th placed among the 48 evaluated referees.
The list is led by Russian Vladimir Vostrikov who had nearly perfect performances in Grand Slam from Tokyo and Paris: he got 9 in both competitions. In the second position is held by the Japanese Akinobu Osako, with an average of 8.3 in four competitions .
