In an audience granted by the Chamber, BOC are presenting their working plan for 2016

In an audience held on Wednesday, June 5th, at the Tourism and Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, in Brasilia, the Brazilian Olympic Committee presented their planning regarding Team Brazil’s participation in Olympic Games Rio 2016. The presentation was made by the BOC’s Sports Executive Director, Marcus Vinicius Freire, who described in detail the entity’s actions and investments in preparing the Brazilian athletes for the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

In London 2012 Brazil won a total of 17 medals (3 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze) and was classified overall on the 15th place, tying with Spain.  Considering all the awarded medals, 4 of them, which is almost 25%, came from judo (1 gold and 3 bronze), which led BOC define judo as the flagship of the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

\"I have no doubt that the judo will be the flagship in 2016. Having 29 athletes on 14 categories in World Top 20 is not something common. The judo is shown as an example to all the 40 confederations, \"said Marcus Vinicius Freire, the Supervising Officer of the Brazilian Olympic Committee.

The audience granted by the Commission, chaired by Deputy Romário (PSB-RJ), was in response to Mr. Benjamin Maranhão’s (PMDB-PB) request.  The audience was also attended by the Director of Sports Excellence and Events Promotion within the National High Performance Sports Secretariat, Mr. Ricardo Avelar; the Vice-President of Olympic Sports Flamengo, Alexandre Povoa; the representative of the Brazilian Confederation of Clubs, Arialdo Boscolo; and the athletics champion, Carmem de Oliveira.

Marcus Vinicius reaffirmed that the Brazilian Olympic Committee’s (BOC) goal for Rio 2016 is reaching Top Ten first countries in number of medals. The goal follows the entity‘s Strategic Map for developing the high-performance Olympic sport in Brazil. Consequently, it will be necessary extending the medal awarding to approximately 13 different sports. The average of awards won by Brazil has been targeted by eight different sports, such as: Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Soccer, Sailing, Judo, Athletics, Swimming and Taekwondo or Equestrianism.

\"We need to increase the number of medals in the sports fields where Brazil traditionally is awarded and win medals in new ones, as it happened in artistic gymnastics, boxing and modern pentathlon in London 2012. Moreover, we should pay special attention to the individual sports that are sharing a large number of medals, “BOC’s director said.

In order to implement the planning aimed at preparing the Brazilian athletes for the Olympic Games Rio 2016, BOC works in partnership with the Brazilian Olympic Confederations, Ministry of Sport as well as with several clubs and associations. Among BOC’s main activities held for this purpose are: offering quality services to athletes based on sport sciences; hiring foreign coaches; materials and sports equipment purchase for the athletes’ training; participation in international competitions; training coaches and sports managers, among others.
