Brazil and Cuba have enhanced their position as continental judo powers and will take part in the final of the BRA Super Pan American Judo Challenge BRA. On the first day of competition, this Monday, October 20th, the Brazilians defeated the Canadian whereas the Cubans overcame the Americans by four to one and guaranteed themselves a position in the big decision. The contention for medals starts on Tuesday (21st). The Chevrolet Hall Arena opens at 6:00 pm to public and the fights begin at 7:00 pm with live broadcast SporTV. The United States and Canada open the event in search for the bronze and then Brazil and Cuba face each other aiming the gold.
Brazil and Canada opened the event. And early it became clear the technical superiority of Brazilian judokas. In the half lightweight, Charles Chibana defeated Simon Gaudreault by ippon in the first 17 seconds. In the lightweight, it was Rafaela Silva’s time to apply an ippon to Mackenzie Burt when there were ten seconds left. Brazil’s only defeat was Gustavo Assis due to the fact that he got two more punishments than Zachary Burt.
Barbara Timo tried to end the Canadian hopes by defeating Alix Renaud-Roy, also by ippon with two minutes and 48 seconds of fight. And finally another lightning ippon. David Moura needed just 16 seconds to beat Ignacio Rodriguez who gave up after an arm immobilization.
"I believe that the confrontation with Cuba will be much more balanced because there will be two great forces of this sport fighting against each other," said Fulvio Myiata, the coach of the men's team.
Cuba also showed strength and defeated the United States by four to one. Anyelo Gomez scored the first point against the Americans by defeating Spencer Augustine by wazari. Hana Carmichael, the main star of the American team, made all equal by overcoming Aliuska Ojeda Martinez by wazari. But Jorge Martinez put the Cubans ahead again due to his yuko on Robert Lee. Masferrer Olga Ramirez ensured the Cuban victory by defeating Janine Nakao by difference in penalties. And Alex Mendoza’s victory by ippon on Peter Stanley ended the confrontation.
