World Number One, Charles Chibana Wants the Medal Which Did Not Come in the World Judo Championships 2013
The 24 year-old athlete, Charles Chibana is one of the likely awarded judokas in the forthcoming World Judo Championship held in Chelyabinsk. This will be the athlete's second participation in such a competition. In last year's edition, the half- lightweight athlete (66kg) from Pinheiros was eliminated in the semi-final as well as in the repechage, staying off the podium. But it was after his debut in world championships that Chibana took off. In the Grand Slam in Moscow, in July last year, he won the gold medal and since then he has not stopped shining. In April this year took he took the lead in the world ranking, where he will be staying until the next update.
In 2014, the judoka applied some ippons and thus he will get to Russia with a background full of podiums as well as head-key due to his first place in the world ranking - the top four in the world ranking are head-keys - and he is one of the gold medal favorites. "It weighs a bit because the other athletes are studying me more. But I try not to worry so much about this but always change my strategy of fighting to surprise the opponent, “Charles Chibana said.
Another factor that influences athletes is the emotional side. Nervousness and anxiety need to be controlled in order not to let being dominated by the competitors and hinder the good performance on the mats in the competition’s days. "Everyone gets nervous. I usually get like this in the first fight, when I get in very focused, paying more attention than ever so that nothing can surprise me. Then I get calmer, "said the athlete who seemed comfortable on the mats from Russia this year, where he won the gold at the Grand Slam of Tyumen.
Chibana’s hopes could not be different. After a spotless track towards the World Judo Championships, the athlete believes to be prepared to win. "In this second participation I want the medal, because I'm ready for it. After last year's World Championship I have been trying to improve and correct my mistakes. We have been training this year also in Japan. All this contributed so that I become physically, technically and psychologically mature, “the judoka concluded.
Charles Chibana kicks in on August 26th, in the Traktor arena from Russia. The qualifiers take place from 2 am, while the finals at 8 am, Brasília time zone. The other athletes fight between August 25th and August 31st.
