The International Federation Updates the World Rankings after the GS of Tyumen

The International Judo Federation posted this Tuesday, July 15th, on its website (www.ijf.org) the updated world ranking after the Grand Slam of Tyumen held last weekend. Brazil had a historic performance in the Russian competition by winning ten medals: five golds, two silvers and three bronzes. This update was the last one before the convening of the athletes who will represent Brazil in the Chelyabinsk 2014 World Championship. The World Championship will be held from August 25th to 31st  in the Russian city.

According to the new rules for the Rio 2016 Olympic cycle, each country can register a maximum of nine male athletes and nine female and no more than two in the same category (the "doubles"). The BJC’ management of high performance has already announced that it will register as many athletes as possible. The world ranking is the main criterion for the choice. And today’s updated release shows that Brazil has 10 athletes among the head-keys of the World Championships. Charles Chibana (66kg) and Rafael Silva (+100 kg), champions in Tyumen, lead their categories. Sarah Menezes (48kg), Erika Miranda (52kg), Rafaela Silva (57kg) and Mary Suelen Altheman (+78 kg) are second placed. Mayra Aguiar is the third in the half heavyweight (78kg), Victor Penalber same position at half-middleweight (81kg). Felipe Kitadai is the fourth among the extra-lightweight (60kg) and closing the list, Alex Pombo is the sixth in the lightweight (73kg).

In the male middleweight, Tiago Camilo, who resumed competing in the Pan American Championships held in April after almost a year break because of a shoulder injury, is the best placed Brazilian – the tenth place. Another world champion in 2007, Luciano Correa, is the best placed Brazilian in the half-heavyweight: he is the 9th with 1130 points. Mariana Barros is the 12th placed among the half-middleweight, the best position among Brazilians. In the female middleweight, Barbara Timo is the best placed national judoka: she is the 21st with 666 points.

Two male and two female categories will have two athletes. Therefore, it is also important to keep an eye on the second placed athletes. Apart from the best positioned athletes, the ranking points out seven Brazilian in the top 20 of their categories: Ketleyn Quadros, bronze medalist in Beijing 2008 and bronze at the Grand Prix Dusseldorf this year, is the sixth placed among the lightweight (57kg); David Moura (+100 kg), silver in Paris Grand Slam and champion in the 2014 Santiago South American Games, is the seventh among the heavyweight judokas; Eric Takabatake (60kg), silver in the Grand Prix of Havana and Ulaanbaatar held this year is the 16th among his extra-lightweight counterparts; Rafael Buzacarini (100kg), third in Qingdao 2013 Grand Prix and in Dusseldorf 2014 is the 17th; Rochele Nunes, the winner of the Pan American Open from Buenos Aires and Montevideo in 2014, is the 18th; and Marcelo Contini (73kg), silver in the Grand Slam of Tyumen last weekend, is the 19th in the lightweight category.

Before the World Championships, the Brazilian teams have two more international events: the Pan American Open of Santiago on July 26th and 27th as well as the Pan American Open of Miami on August 1st and 2nd. The team called for the World Championships will take part in acclimatization sessions held in Paris before going to Russia. The arrival in France is scheduled on August 14th and their flight to Chelyabinsk on August 21st.
