The Brazilian Team Is Convened to the World Judo Championship
Tiago Camilo, Sarah Menezes and the BJC’s Performance Director, Ney Wilson, will attend the Press Conference this Tuesday, August the 6th, from 10 a.m, in the Departure Lounge of the Santos Dumont Airport
The Brazilian team was registered this Monday (August the 5th) on the database of the International Judo Federation to participate in the World Judo Championships Rio 2013, from August the 26th to September the 1st, in Maracanãzinho.
The Brazilian Judo Confederation used their nine available openings to which they are entitled in the individual tournament (one athlete per weight category, with the possibility of having two judokas in two categories). Therefore, the team will be composed of:
For the team competition (which will take place on Sunday, September the 1st), the BJC registered six athletes. According to the rules, the team competition will not include judokas representing the extra-light (48kg and 60kg) and middle-heavy (78kg and 100kg) categories. The six athletes who participate in the Team Competition are the following: Mariana Silva (63kg), Barbara Timo (70kg), Marcelo Contini (73kg), Mauro Moura (81kg), Eduardo Santos (90kg) and David Moura (+100 kg).
Brazil is in the 14th place in the medal ranking of the all times World Judo Championships, with 28 podium positions of which 18 were won in the last decade. According to the entity’s Performance Director, Ney Wilson, Brazil’s goal is to overcome, quantitatively, the country’s highest performance in the competition: five medals in Paris/2011 when Leandro Cunha (66kg) and Rafaela Silva (57kg) won silver whereas Sarah Menezes (48kg), Mayra Aguiar (78kg) and Leandro Guilheiro (81kg) won bronze.
\"We want to win more medals and, at least, one gold in this competition. It will not be easy, because every year the World Championship is more difficult, especially because of the rule which allows countries to register more than one athlete in the existing categories. But we are planning and working to make a great competition. The result, however, will be only known on September the 1st, “he said.
Brazil currently has five leaders in the IJF’s world ranking: Victor Penalber (81kg), Rafael Silva (+100 kg), Sarah Menezes (48kg), Mayra Aguiar (78kg) and Maria Suelen Altheman (+78 kg), all entering on the mats from Maracanãzinho as head-keys.
According to the International Judo Federation, this should be the greatest World Championship of all times and the event takes place in the next Olympic city.
\"A large event such as the World Judo Championship, the only world event confirmed by now in Rio which makes part of this special Olympic cycle, needs some investment to become a fact. In addition, it brings some payback, besides increasing the visibility of the host city. The World will be broadcast in nearly 140 countries that will get to know Brazil a little bit. I\'m sure Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, as hosts of the next Olympic Games, will get many advantages from organizing this event, “said Paulo Wanderley Teixeira, BJC’s president.
The female Brazilian Team will train at the CT of Brazil’s Team (Maria Lenk) between August the 7th and the 8th, in two shifts: 10h30 and 18h00. On August the 20th, all the Brazilian delegation convened to the World Championships Rio 2013 will check-in at Windsor Plaza Hotel (Copacabana) and start training at the Army’s School of Physical Education (Urca). The training time will be further confirmed.
