The Brazilian Judo Team Is Convened for the World Judo Championships Astana 2015

The Brazilian Judo Confederation announced on Thursday, June 25th, at Porto Real Hotel in Mangaratiba, where the selection is training for the Pan American Games Toronto 2015, 17 names of the 18 athletes who will represent the country in the World Championships from Astana 2015 between August 24th -30th at Alau Ice Palace. In the women’s, Brazil will have two extra-light and heavyweight representatives. In men’s category, the extra-lightweight one will be also “doubled”. Due to Rafael Silva’s injury on Monday, the second weight with two judokas will be set only in late July. The 17 athletes summoned today are:

48kg – Sarah Menezes (AJ Expedito Falcão/PI) and Nathália Brigida (Minas TC/MG)
52kg – Érika Miranda (Minas TC/MG)
57kg – Rafaela Silva (Instituto Reação/RJ)
63kg – Mariana Silva (Minas TC/MG)
70kg – Maria Portela (Sogipa/RS)
78kg – Mayra Aguiar (Sogipa/RS)
+78kg – Maria Suelen Altheman (AJ Rogério Sampaio/SP) and Rochele Nunes (Sogipa/RS)

60kg – Felipe Kitadai (Sogipa/RS)and Eric Takabatake (EC Pinheiros/SP)
66kg – Charles Chibana (EC Pinheiros/SP)
73kg – Alex Pombo (Minas Tênis Clube/MG)

"BJC’s purpose is getting five medals and reaching two finals, evolving in quantity compared to the last World Championship. We wish also to get two medals with the male athletes, our objective since the World Judo Championships Paris 2011", Ney Wilson, the BJC Performance Director, stated.

With four medals won at the last World Judo Championship- one gold won by Mayra Aguiar (78kg), one silver by Maria Suelen Altheman (+ 78kg) and two bronze won by Erika Miranda (52kg) and Rafael Silva (+ 100kg) - Brazil rose to 12th place in the medals ranking of World Judo Championships of all times with 38 podiums - 6 gold, 11 silver and 21 bronze medals. Under President Paulo Wanderley Teixeira’s management – starting from the World Judo Championship held in Osaka (JPN) 2003 -, the Brazilian athletes have risen 28 times on the podium.

The Brazilian team boards on August 12th to France for a period of acclimatization. All athletes and the coaching staff will board from the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro. The athletes travel to Astana in two groups: the first one on August 20th and the other on August 24th.

"We are very close to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, our big goal. This is the last World Championship of the cycle and it will be a great test for our work. I have no doubt that we are on the right way, working every detail in pursuit of excellence and this makes us sure of a good result in Astana, "President Paulo Wanderley stated.
