The Brazilian team was enrolled this Tuesday, July 16th, on the International Judo Federation website in order to participate in the 2014 Chelyabinsk World Championship, held from August 25th to 31st in Trakto Ice Arena. The Brazilian Judo Confederation will use all the nine positions to which they are entitled in the individual tournament (one per each weight, with the possibility of enrolling two athletes in two categories). Thus, the National Team will be composed of:

+100kg – Rafael Silva (EC Pinheiros/SP) and David Moura (Instituto Reação/RJ)

"The coaching commission used the same criteria adopted in the most important competitions from the calendar: the best placed athletes within the ranking were called. We also called the second best placed. It is the fairest criterion because it highlights the athletes who had the most significant performances in the competitions in which they participated, "said Ney Wilson, the BJC’s Performance Director.

Brazil is in the 13th place in the medal chart of World Judo Championships of all times, with 34 podiums - 5 gold, 10 silver and 19 bronze. Under President Paulo Wanderley Teixeira’s management – starting from the World Championship held in Osaka (JPN) 2003 – the Brazilian athletes rose 24 times on the podium. The BJC’s goal is repeating the best result in number of medals: six in the Rio 2013 World Championships -the gold brought by Rafaela Silva (57kg), the silver by Erika Miranda (52kg), Maria Suelen Altheman (+78 kg) and Rafael Silva (+100 kg) and the bronze won by Sarah Menezes (48kg) and Mayra Aguiar (78kg).

"We are working in order to have the same result as the female team (one gold, two silver and two bronze medals) and improve the performance of the male (one silver) in the quality of medals in 2014. In terms of quantity, we expect a similar number as the last year’s World Championship. It would be an excellent result given that in 2013 we fought at home. But I believe that athletes are very confident after the results from the past competitions, “Ney Wilson said, reminding that Brazil had the best outcome in a Grand Slam; last weekend they won 10 medals (five gold, two silver and three bronze) in Tyumen.

There will be 12 Brazilian head-keys in the World Judo Championships because these athletes are among the eight best judokas in their respective categories. They are the following: Felipe Kitadai (60kg), Charles Chibana (66kg), Alex Pombo (73kg), Victor Penalber (81kg), Rafael Silva (+100kg), David Moura (+100kg), Sarah Menezes (48kg), Érika Miranda (52kg), Rafaela Silva (57kg), Ketleyn Quadros (57kg), Mayra Aguiar (78kg)and  Maria Suelen Altheman (+78kg). Chibana and Rafael are number one head-keys.

On August 13th the Brazilian team boards to France for acclimatization. On August 21st all the athletes and their coaching commission will board to Chelyabinsk from the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro.

“I am sure we are doing a good job, we are on the right track and this makes us sure of a good outcome in this World Judo Championship. However, we want to make it clear for everyone that this is one of the stages, an important one, towards the Olympic Games 2016, which is our ultimate goal.” President Paulo Wanderley stated.
