Raquel Silva Is Gold Awarded and thus Brazil Wins 10 Medals on the First Day of the Open from Montevideo
Besides the gold, the country’s judokas won 3 silver and seven bronze medals. On Tuesday there will be 17 more Brazilian athletes competing.
The Pan-American Open from Montevideo began on Monday, March 17th, and Brazil was the country winning most of the medals: ten! The best performance was Raquel Silva’s, the elder sister of Rafaela Silva, who won the gold in the half lightweight category. She overcame Mirella Graves (USA), her compatriot Milena Mendes, Angelica Delgado (USA) and the British Louise Renicks in the final round.

In the same category, Rafaela Barbosa overcame Oritia Gonzalez ( ARG ) and so she got the bronze. Katherine Campos ( 63kg ) had an excellent performance in order to reach the final round but she did not manage to defeat the British Sarah Clark . The judoka from Pernambuco was penalized four times and she ended up with the silver. Regarding the women’s team, Gabriela Chibana (48kg), Flavia Gomes (57kg), Giullia Penalber (57kg) and Mariana Silva (63kg) have also got the third position.
In the men’s, Brazil got two silvers with Marcelo Contini (73kg) and Luiz Revite (66kg). Eric Takabatake (60kg) defeated the Chilean Juan Perez and took the bronze. Allan Kuwabara (60kg) arrived in contention for bronze but could not resist the experienced Nicholas Kossor (USA) and finished in the fifth place.
“I think I fought intelligently and strategically well. But in the end, although I was winning I lost in the last second, which left me with a bitter taste. Now, I have to raise my head because next weekend there is another competition, \"said Marcelo Contini, who was beaten in the final by the French Ugo Legrand. On March 22nd and 23rd the Panamerican Open from Buenos Aires will be held.
Tomorrow’s athletes are: Dennis Barbosa ( 81kg ) , Felipe Soares ( 81kg ) , Felipe Costa ( 81kg ), Milton Miranda ( 81kg ), Ricardo Trevisan ( 90kg ), Marcelo Ferreira ( 90kg ), Eduardo Bettoni (90kg ), Hugo Pessanha ( 100kg ), João Gabriel Schlittler ( 100kg ), Horácio Antunes ( 100kg ), Ricardo Koga ( +100 kg ) , Márcio Santos ( +100 kg ) , Gabriel Santos ( +100 kg ) , Kelly Mesquita (70kg) , Samantha Soares (78kg), Tuany Siqueira ( +78 kg ) and Rochele Nunes ( +78 kg ) defend the colors of Brazil .
