Rafael Silva Is Injured and David Moura Is Called for the Panamerican Games

Rafael Silva got injured on his biggest right tendon pectoral muscle during the force training held this Monday in São Paulo and he will not be able to compete anymore in the Panamerican Games Toronto 2015. He will be substituted by David Moura, the current 12th placed among the world best athletes in the heavy weight category. Rafael Silva will undergo on June 30th a medical intervention led by Dr. Breno Schor, the doctor of the Brazilian Judo Confederation.

"I am very sad that I will not be able to fight in the Pan American Games and to defend the colors of my country, but I am quite sure that I will be back stronger. I thank for the messages of encouragement and I count on all your support to come back as soon as possible. I'll be supporting our team who goes to Canada, "Rafael said.

"Injuries are part of the life of a high level competitor, and we have to deal with this kind of situation. The athletes’ technical level is similar and, therefore, the coaching staff believes the team is very strong and ready to meet the objective of seeking medals in 14 categories, “Ney Wilson, the Performance Director, said.

David Moura won the title of the Pan-American Championship of his category in Edmonton (Canada), in April. His background has other important achievements such as silver medals in the Grand Slams in Paris in 2014 and Baku in 2013, and bronze medals at the Grand Prix of Almaty and Tashkent in 2013. His first major title was the gold won in the World Cup San Salvador in 2010. In the 2014 World Cup in Chelyabinsk (Russia), he reached the contention for medals, but ended up in the fifth place. Now he will compete for the first time in the Pan American Games.

"Unfortunately, the call came with a mate’s injury. But I will do my best to honor this opportunity and get a medal for Brazil, "said the athlete from Cuiabá, Mato Grosso.

David Moura comes on Wednesday, June 24th, to Rio de Janeiro and joins the rest of the Brazilian delegation in the concentration for the Pan American Games in Mangaratiba, located around 100km away of the Marvelous City. On July 2nd, the athletes and the coaching staff travel to Toronto.
