Leandro Guilheiro Is Back on Tatamis after a Year-and-Two Month-Break
The Olympic medalist Leandro Guilheiro, the half middleweight category (81kg), resumed training this Wednesday, July 2nd, after a year-and-two month-break. His absence was due to a surgery on his right knee.
In March 2013 Leonardo was starting one more battle. The athlete, twice bronze-awarded in the Olympics, had a ligament injury and needed to undergo a surgery. After two surgeries, the judoka spent some time in order to recover himself.
According to the Brazilian team orthopedist, Wagner Castropil, Leandro Guilheiro had already begun the physical training to strengthen his muscles and be able to practice judo. The doctor sees the athlete every month and he can say when he is back to competitions.
"Leandro Guilheiro is gradually coming back. Now it’s time the athlete start training judo again. I'll watch him monthly and I believe in July / August he can start training normally. His coming back to competitions will depend on how he will feel in this new stage. We cannot say for sure now, we have to wait a little longer." Dr. Wagner Castropil said.
The champion celebrated his return posting on his social page a video in which he was performing the uchikomi (repeated blows). In other words, he expressed his excitement of wearing the kimono again. "I came back!" the athlete said.
Another athlete who was celebrating was Charles Chibana, Guilheiro’s co-training partner. The current leader of the world rankings in the half lightweight category (66kg) posted a picture on his social networks in which his fried was applying him a blow.
"And after a year and two months away, he's back! I am very happy with his coming back! We are together, master! Let’s know them out!”, Chibana published and completed with a quote from Confucius: "One’s greatest glory is not standing, but rising every time one falls."
