Brazilian National Team Boards to Tymen for the Grand Slam

Fourteen athletes are boarding to Russia today. Sarah Menezes (48kg), Erika Miranda (52kg), Rafaela Silva (57kg), Ketleyn Quadros (57kg), Mariana Barros (63kg), Barbara Timo (70kg), Mayra Aguiar (78kg), Maria Suelen Altheman (+78 kg), Felipe Kitadai (60kg), Charles Chibana (66kg), Alex Pombo (73kg), Victor Penalber (81kg), Luciano Correa (100 kg) and Rafael Silva (+100 kg) board for the Grand Slam of Tyumen, which will be held on 12th  and 13th  July and then they will participate in the International Training Camp organized between July 14th-16th.

Before the release of the convocation- scheduled on July 17th – to the World Championships which will be held from 25th to 31st August, the athletes keep on their training. The Grand Slam of Tyumen is one of the most important competitions of the year and the last one before the World Championship that, according to Ney Wilson, is supposed to be attended by most countries. Therefore, the event will serve as a strong workout for all Brazilians.

 "This is the last major competition before the World Championships and that is why we believe most countries will take part in, making the competition very hard," said Ney Wilson and added. "We will find there the Brazilians’ likely opponents in the World Judo Championship".

As a strategic team composition, it will be formed of the following members: the Performance Director Ney Wilson, the coaches Luiz Shinohara and Rosicleia Campos, the nutritionist Roberta Lima and the physiotherapist Fabio Minutti. Moreover, the strategist Leonardo Mataruna will join the delegation. He is responsible for compiling all materials video footage so that the committee technique, along with athletes, can draw the best control strategies.

"Mataruna is in our major competitions. His presence is important for us to follow the evolution of our athletes, opponents, so that we can draw the best strategies for the Brazilian judokas, " Wilson Ney stated.

The competition will be played on the mats of the Athletic Center. On Saturday, the Grand Slam starts with the women’s extra-lightweight (48kg), half lightweight (52kg), lightweight (57kg) and half middleweight (70kg) categories together with the men’s extra-lightweight (60kg), half lightweight (66kg) and lightweight (73kg) ones. On Sunday, the second and final day of competition, female athletes compete in the middleweight (70kg), half heavyweight (78kg) and heavyweight (+78 kg) categories as well as the male athletes in the half middleweight (81kg), middleweight (90kg), half heavyweight (100kg ) and heavyweight (+100 kg) categories.

The event will start at 10am and the finals take place starting from 5 pm, local time. Esporte Interativo broadcasts live the competition.
