After a Ten-Month Break, Mayra Aguiar Competes in Tyumen GP

For those of you who may not remember, the last competition in which Mayra Aguiar (78kg) competed was the last year’s World Championships, held in August in Rio de Janeiro. After winning the bronze medal, the athlete stayed away from the mat because of two surgeries, one on her right knee and another on her left elbow, undergone at the end of the last year. In April this year the judoka resumed her training and she is in Russia for the Grand Slam of Tymen held this weekend.

The event is one of the most important in the International Judo Federation’s calendar and it will bring together the biggest names from the judo world. Besides Mayra Aguiar, the half heavyweight category (78kg) will be represented by two other medalists in London 2012 Olympic Games: the champion Kayla Harrison, from the United States, and the British vice-champion, Gemma Gibbons.

Despite the Brazilian judoka’s dedication and commitment regarding her recovery, the doctor of the Brazilian team, Breno Schor points out that this is a test championship. "We did all the analysis and she is recovered. But this is a competition in which she could get into the competition’s rhythm and be ready for the World Championships from August, which is our focus, "Breno Schor said.

It should be reminded that July 17th is the expected day of releasing the composition of the team who will take part in the World Championship (from August 25th to 31st) in Russia.

Besides Mayra Aguiar (78kg), Sarah Menezes (48kg), Erika Miranda (52kg), Rafaela Silva (57kg), Ketleyn Quadros (57kg), Mariana Barros (63kg), Barbara Timo (70kg), Maria Suelen Altheman (+78 kg ), Felipe Kitadai (60kg), Charles Chibana (66kg), Alex Pombo (73kg), Victor Penalber (81kg), Luciano Correa (100 kg) and Rafael Silva (+100 kg) also enter the mats this weekend.

The competition will be disputed on the mats of the Athletic Center. On Saturday, the Grand Slam starts with the women’s extra-lightweight (48kg) categories, half lightweight (52kg), lightweight (57kg) and half middleweight (70kg) together with the men’s extra-lightweight (60kg), half lightweight (66kg) and lightweight (73kg). On Sunday, the second and final day of competition, female athletes compete in the middleweight (70kg), half heavyweight (78kg) and heavyweight (+78 kg) together with the men’s half middleweight (81kg), middleweight (90kg), half heavyweight (100kg) and heavyweight (+100 kg).
